The most magical thing since running tap water….

…..is my Babyliss Pro Miracurl!

It is a haircurler made for uncoordinated, clumsy, accident-prone women and men, just like myself! Husband gifted it to me at Xmas, I guess obsessively showing him Youtube videos of Babyliss Miracurl got through to him :)

Babyliss Pro Miracurl

I have bought conventional hair curlers before, but could never master using it. I always ended up either burning myself or at the verge of burning my hair off.

Too scatterbrained to estimate how long I should leave the hair on the curler and all the turning and twisting of my wrist and hair without burning my face off….wow, how do people even do it!?

Anyone remember this girl?

In the end, I just opted to tie my hair up coz I didn’t know what else to do with my frizzy mop.

My default hairstyle pre-Babyliss.

Thank goodness, those days are now over, thanks to this nifty gadget with a weirdass name – Babyliss.

The best hair curler ever.

It has three time settings, three heat settings and three curl settings (left, right or alternate). I find the best setting for me is medium heat with 10 seconds….my curls could last for 2 full days regardless of sweat, cold and sleep.

All the settings on the Miracurl.

# – First, you need to do is get about an inch thick of hair, comb it out (I use my fingers only).

Grab about an inch of hair and smooth them out.

# – Then, slip the Babyliss Pro Miracurl over where you want your curls to start.

Put hair between the Miracurl where you want your curls to start.

# – Then you clamp the hair. It will begin to wind your hair in. No turning the device manually.

Clamp the hair.

# – After that, it will start to beep slowly and when it’s time to release your hair, it will beep quickly. Easy peasy.

Tada!

# – The trick for the curls to last long is to allow the curls to completely cool down before styling.

Right after…the curls are tight and I look like a Jewish man.

# – After hair cools down, run fingers through to loosen curls and style.

After hair cools down, run fingers through and style. More sexy, right????

This is not an advertorial, I just really love this gadget and want to share it with the world! It can be bought at Shins in Malaysia at about RM700 or slightly more. I know there are a lot of OEMs out there at the fraction of the price but I think better buy a legit brand like Babyliss lah…

If you’re not into spending that much money, you can check out my hair curling technique using socks here. Yeap, socks…as in the ones you wear on your feet.

Hubs also bought me a Babyliss hair dryer later on hehe. The motor is designed by Ferrari (not joking), will probably blog about it soon.

Mentaiko and rice…finally!

Truth is, things have been rather rough for me at the health front. No point in dwelling so I will move to things that make me happy.

++++++

I love mentaiko – whether in onigiri, pasta or temaki. The saltiness and pepperiness of the pollock roe – sublime!

Thing is though, I could never find a place where they serve just mentaiko and rice – the closest I could get to is onigiri mentaiko, which often is more like a teaspoon of mentaiko served with a fistful of rice. So unsatisfying!

My predicament has been resolved recently though. A couple of weeks ago we went to our regular Japanese restaurant, Niji Sushi, for dinner and I noticed that they have started serving mentaiko temaki. Of course I ordered the temaki, it was nice but as expected it’s mentaiko that had been mixed with some mayo and seasonings.

I told G that I wish that restaurants would just serve big slabs of mentaiko with rice instead of mixing it with mayonaise lah, cheese lah etc. G told me I should just asked the restaurant’s boss about it.

And so I did. He reacted with so much enthusiasm! He told me he has mentaiko everyday, just that he doesn’t display it in his menu because the menu is already quite big. He told me he could definitely whip it up for me on our next visit.

So we went back today and the boss upon sitting us down asked if I would like my mentaiko and rice. I was so happy he remembered. He said it’s going to be lightly grilled and I just nodded happily.

Mentaiko and rice /angels sing

It was as delicious as I imagined it to be. I even had a second helping of rice!

I’m guessing you’re thinking this is such a trivial post but I had so little appetite in the past weeks that this had been easily the tastiest, most appetising meal I’ve had for so long! I feel so grateful!

Rice mixed with salty, peppery pollock roes. Best!

Well, if you ever decided to eat at Niji Sushi, do give this meal a try!

Happy Chinese New Year 2014!

When I discovered that I had a puncture in the basement carpark of my office just before chinese new year, the first thing that popped into my head was, “Wow..this snake ain’t happy about leaving!”

Kept my cool and called the husband, who promptly gave me several numbers to call. My saviour arrived in less than 15 minutes. He discovered a tiny pebble lodged within the valve of the affected tyre. I racked my brains trying to figure out if I had pissed anyone off on the road or while parking, nothing came to mind. This could only be the work of a mischievous vandal.

Anyway, I was just really happy I didn’t have to get stuck for hours and that my bouts of diarrhoea had calmed down significantly. Yeap, I have failed to mention that I was already suffering from the embarrassing affliction for over a week. This snake ain’t happy about leaving!

Thankfully, that was pretty much it – peeing from my ass and getting a flat tyre. By CNY’s eve, everything was back to normal. Oh, I’m also proud to announce that my credit cards are at ZERO balance. Glad to have gotten that off my back!

Reunion dinner was steamboat at my mom’s. My white husband even brought his own bottle of Sriracha. He’s very serious about his steamboat.

# – Steamboat yum yum.

Can’t do a reunion without Charlie….he’s my hairy son afterall! Coco, my brother’s mutt is still as in love with Charlie as ever.

# – Coco and Charlie.

On the first day of Chinese New Year, I totally dressed up. Even put on some make-up! Curled my hair with the Babyliss Miracurl – this is definitely one of the best beauty products I have ever owned.

# – OOTD for 1st day of CNY.

Got the dress from Kitschen. Not sure about the phallic symbols.

Mom made my favourite vegetarian dish – Lo Hon Jai or Buddha’s Delight. The husband got his favourite Lap Mei Fan – rice with assortment of waxed meat.

# – Lohonjai and lapmeifan.

After breakfast, we drove to Mentakab to visit my popo. She cooked up a storm as usual.

# – More foooood!

After visiting my popo and my cousins, we came back to KL and I basically vegetated for the rest of the holiday.

Really enjoyed this year’s simple CNY celebration. I am feeling very positive for the year of the horse and hope you are too. Happy Chinese New Year!
