1st Wedding Anniversary trip to Malihom, Penang.

Our first wedding anniversary fell on 27 October 2013. We decided to go on a quick getaway to celebrate a week later.

I had looked around for a couple of weeks for the perfect place to go – we wanted somewhere not too far, secluded, comfortable and peaceful. We wanted to do absolutely nothing.

A few places appeared on our list and after more research, we decided to go with Malihom in Balik Pulau, Penang.

We left KL around 3pm and reached the foothill of Malihom at about 7.30pm. We forgot about the Deepavalli and Awal Muharram long weekend when we booked the place, so traffic into Penang Island was pretty heavy.

Malihom is truly a secluded place, if you don’t have GPS or Waze you might have trouble finding it, especially at night. The drive up the hill might also be quite challenging for some as the private road was only wide enough for one car. Malihom does have a proprietary traffic control system though, where you press a button at the top or the bottom of the hill which would turn on a light to warn oncoming cars. And I believe they provide transportation service for a nominal price.

We arrived at Malihom about 8pm and greeted by a few smiling staff. We were immediately served fruit juices and then whisked off to dinner. They had already set up a table on a top deck, our view was the faraway cityline and the Penang bridge.

I was really expecting food to be mediocre at Malihom as meals were included in the rates. How wrong was I! We looked forward to every meal!

# – Prawn salad, pumpkin soup and salmon with tomatoes. Dessert was lime cake, made daily by Malihom’s owner.

Soon enough, we noticed we’re the only guests at Malihom.

We retreated to our room, which was really a re-purposed traditional Thai rice barn. Our barn’s name was Sripartum or Source of Knowledge in english. We went to the library and picked up a few DVDs. There were plenty of books too but we had our Nooks with us.

Then we got serious….we switched our phones to airplane mode!!!!

# – Our bed. The balcony opens up to an unobstructed view of the sea.

Woke up early the next day. We were excited to check out the rest of Malihom as it was too dark to see anything the night before.

# – The view that greeted us in the morning. Missing it already!

# – The view to the right from our balcony.

# – Our barn…the Sripartum. It’s a split level villa with a bathroom below and the bed upstairs.

# – Breakfast was fresh fruits and egg in the hole for me.

After breakfast, we basically relaxed around Malihom.

# – Hubs enjoying the fish pond.

# – On one of the cool viewing platforms.

# – A beautiful path.

# – The viewing deck.

# – Chilling with my legs.

# – The resident sleepy cats.

# – The infinity pool.

We went swimming of course. We had the pool all to ourselves as the other guests wouldn’t check in until late afternoon.

# – My sweet husband helping me fix my bikini. The string had slid out.

# – My hilariously unappetising swimming face.

# – Hubs’ swimming face.

# – Have made this my Facebook cover photo.

After the swim, we went for lunch.

# – Fresh fruits, fried mushrooms and smoked duck.

After lunch, I drew a bath and had a long relaxing soak :)

# – Our tub with a view.

# – After a bath, I relaxed on our balcony.

We had the balcony doors and main door opened, creating a nice draft in the room. There was no need for aircon or fan. Hubs drifted into a nice nap while I read my book – OJ Simpson’s If I Did It, hehehehhehe.

# – My husband sleeps.

# – Woke him up in time for sunset.

And then it was dinner time. We were served amazing Burmese food! Most of the staff at Malihom are Burmese and after chatting with them, I found out that while they have a dedicated chef for other cuisines, for Burmese cuisines, they all contribute to the dishes.

# – Started with nutmeg soup (my first time – very nice) and an array of chicken and fish curries, salads and vegetables. Dessert was sweet sago.

And then it was time to sleep. We snuck in a few episodes of CSI (our choice of tv and books were unintentionally grim considering the context of the holiday :P) and dozed off to dreamland.

We woke up to Burmese breakfast called Mohinga – a traditional Burmese dish of noodles in fish broth. So, so, so delicious!

# – Mohinga with a fresh passionfruit and passionfruit juice. Passionfruits were available throughout the resort, the plants grow amazingly well at Malihom.

After breakie, we went for a swim again.

# – We made it 1 year! Decades more to come :)

We had lunch after the swim, our final meal at Malihom.

# – Deep-fried okra, cracked black pepper salmon, chicken schnitzel and homemade lime cake.

While having lunch, it rained really heavily. So we sat at the deck for a couple of hours sipping tea and coffee waiting it out.

And then it was time to leave. Our initial plan was to have a food jaunt around Georgetown after we’ve checked out but because we were so relaxed, we decided to head home straight, avoiding the hustle & bustle. It was a good decision. We were in Penang but it didn’t feel like it. We felt like we were in a different country entirely – that’s how wonderful being at Malihom was.

# – The only thing Penang about our whole trip.

We’re definitely going back.

Sparkly nails, cheeky dress and loving my popo’s nagging.

Got my nails done over the weekend. Had to use ordinary polish instead of my usual gel polish because my manicurist said my nails had thinned significantly :(

She advised me to lay off the gel till Chinese New Year. Sounded bad!

Gel is a kind of fast drying (cured by UV light in seconds instead of air drying) nail lacquer that doesn’t chip, I think it’s the best invention ever for active women but does have its drawbacks – one of it is thinning nails as the polish clings to them really hard.

# – This is OPI “All Sparky & Gold” with “Magazine Cover Minnie” to break the monotony.

Gareth doesn’t like the red polish, he thinks it looks like they ran out of gold. Men :P

I dressed up over the weekend for a wedding. A dress that’s demure on the front but a little cheeky at the back.

Mom got the dress for herself from Asos but she chickened out of wearing it so she altered it to fit me. I love having introduced Asos to my mom….. hehehehe.

# –  Demure.

Dress from Asos. Stillettos from Bangkok. Clutch bag from Burberry, a birthday gift from hubs.

I hardly wear makeup because am too friggin lazy. Here’s one of me with fake lashes and the lot.

# – Birded up.

I use Lancome Teint Idole liquid foundation, set with compact from MAC. Blush is Lancome Blush Subtil. Tinted lip balm from IN2IT in orange for the lips. Eyeshadows from Urban Decay Naked 2 with eyeliner from Red Earth and brows with Empro brow pencil. Lashes from aliexpress – got like 100 pairs for less than RM80 lol.

My face shape changes everytime I take a picture since I started wearing braces. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I think it’s awful! And right now, it is in an awful phase.

Went back to Mentakab to celebrate my popo’s birthday in advance. As usual, she nagged me about babies. Something different this time though, after nagging me for like half hour….she suddenly got quiet and then sheepishly told me to just ignore what she said. Told me to let nature takes its course.

My heart was just exploding with love for my granny cause she probably realised she was exerting too much pressure on me so she tried to rein it back.

# – Popo and Martin – my cousin’s kid. Too cute!!!!

# – Popo feeding hubs with cake. Love this picture! And that’s my mom, not me.

As I get older, I don’t mind being nagged so much by my elderly relatives. I am realising that it comes from a place of love and I consider it a gift to be fussed over :)

Me and babies.

The topic of having children have come up multiple times during my almost decade-old relationship with Gareth. Very early on, we decided that we would put off having children for as long as possible for a few reasons – too expensive, too inconvenient, too much work, too painful etc etc etc.

Our beliefs were further reinforced after we got Charlie, our dog. It was quite tough having Charlie at first. As a puppy, he pooped and peed everywhere, he vomited after every meal due to his fish allergy and he howled or barked the entire time he’s left alone at home. So many times I toyed with the idea of giving him away! Thanks to Charlie, we just naturally figured that having a human child would entail all those problems, times a million.

# – Wanted to throw this furry ball away when he was a puppy.

I was never good with babies or young children anyway. I didn’t find them particularly endearing. Sure, there had been kids who were just adorable and had managed to occupy my attention for more than 10 minutes, but I’d eventually lose interest. I actually dreaded going to baby full moon parties because I fear that the parents would expect me to carry their precious newborns!

If I saw a friend pushing a baby stroller in a mall or something, I would deliberate walk the opposite direction to avoid having conversations about babies.

Gareth, on the other hand, is far more accepting of having children. I knew very early on that despite my reservations, I will want to have babies for his sake, but on the condition that I get to cut it out of my belly while I was 100% knocked out. Yeap, “cut it out”. Verbatim.

I also accidentally exclaimed to a then-acquaintance-now-friend, that I will only go for c-sections because I do not want a mangled vagina. This friend, upon hearing those words that came out of my mouth, told me, very stoically, that she does not have a mangled vagina after giving birth naturally to 4 beautiful kids. I felt like a twat.

Honestly, I really didn’t think my perceptions of having children would change but….

Recently, I’ve been strangely drawn to reading mother forums. I get excited when I see expensive used designer strollers being sold for cheap on Facebook. I think about children’s names a lot. I tell Gareth things like we’re going to eschew formula and feed our babies with my milk/cow’s milk. I rack my brains over how to mosquito-proof babies. I look forward to seeing my colleague’s baby girl’s pictures on her Facebook. I get fascinated by stories of different parenting methods.

No, no, no. I’m not pregnant. We haven’t even started trying. Although I would really love to.

# – With a friend’s adorable son at our wedding.

From years of not wanting to have babies to suddenly feeling like I need to be pregnant, now. Of course, I get unusually worried about my chances of getting pregnant. I wish I had taken care of my body better. I get very sad when my period gets really painful (which it does every damn month) because I fear it’s a sign that something’s wrong with me. Gareth told me to stop being so negative and let nature takes its course. Besides, should things get difficult, there’s always IVF.

While writing this blog post, Gareth suddenly messaged me and gave me the link to this adorable video of a kid’s stick figure halloween costume.

I can’t even!!! I want to buy a lot of LED lights.
