BreadFruits – fresh, delicious brunch and breakfast in Desa Sri Hartamas.

I had seen a couple of people posted about this place on Instagram and couldn’t help but be intrigued. Located in Desa Sri Hartamas, it’s 10 minutes drive from home which is a great plus for us. Upon entering the premise, we noticed that the place offered fresh fruits too.

# – Was raining, so I couldn’t take a better picture of the restaurant front.

Going through pictures of food served at BreadFruits on Instagram, especially of the antipasto platter (a set of cured hams, cheeses, bread, soft boiled eggs etc) really had me thinking about eating at BreadFruits for days.

Alas, when we’re finally there, it dawned on hubs that I couldn’t eat either cured meat or soft cheeses due to my state of pregnancy, FML. What to do? Had to order different stuff lor….

We were there at an odd time, around 4pm so the restaurant was not that packed but they were never short of visitors. Mostly people coming in for fresh juices and fruits.

Since I couldn’t eat the antipasto set, I decided on a “Roasted Banana Bacon French Toast with Passion Wild Honey”.

# – Tell me this doesn’t make you want to eat the eff out of it.

The sweet and savoury combo was spot-on. The bananas were perfectly caramelised and the back bacon was cooked just right. Toasted almond flakes provided a nice crunch. The pot of wild honey infused with passion fruit that came with tied everything together splendidly.

My only complaint is that there wasn’t more of the bananas and bacons as the rye bread french toasts were quite big, I had to be quite diligent with making sure that every bite of french toast came with some banana and bacon :)

That being said, calling it a complaint is a gross overstatement!

Hubs ordered a “Satisfry Up”, which is BreadFruits’s version of a big breakfast. It’s pretty customisable and comes with tea/coffee and a glass of fresh juice, good value!

# – Real sausage and bacon with perfectly whipped up scrambled eggs. Hubs was really pleased that it’s served with a side of salad too.

As for drinks, they have a large variety of healthy juices to choose from – I picked “Liver Cleanser” made out of beetroot, celery, carrot and orange.

I was impressed it came in a pint glass with not a single cube of ice – pure unadulterated juice happiness!

# – My blood-red liver cleanser with hub’s juice of the day that came with his big breakfast (think it must be melon-based juice, we couldn’t tell but it was niceeee).

Hubs had both a cappuccino and a latte, which he said were good.

# – The latte.

We couldn’t leave without ordering desserts, as the dessert display was calling out to us the entire time….

# – Angels sing.

We settled on beetroot seed cake and a lemon meringue pie. The beetroot cake was moist and full of texture. It tasted like a very good carrot cake, minus the frosting.

Hubs especially enjoyed the lemon meringue pie though I would much prefer a thicker lemon curd filling. It’s a good pie nevertheless with nice short crust pastry.

# – Healthy but tasty beetroot seed cake.

# – Lemon meringue pie.

So will we go back? Hell yes.

In fact we toyed with the idea of staying till dinner time so we could try out the delicious looking pastas and spanish egg bake but we didn’t lah. That would just be weird.

They also serve a house specialty – a 7 minute slow cooked soft boiled organic egg which I really, really, really want to try.

So finally! A place that serves delicious and healthy meals without demonising bacons! Last but not least, the prices are pretty reasonable with the most expensive things ranging mostly in the higher RM20s.

Boat Noodle Restaurant – how many empty bowls can you stack?

After seeing a few friends mentioned this new restaurant, we were determined to have a go.

The first time we went, it was already closed around 4pm so we ended up having Texas Chicken next door (btw, I love the spicy fried chickens). The following time, we made sure we reached about 1pm.

# – Boat Noodle.

The restaurant was already quite packed, but we got a small table almost immediately. Service was good, the waiting staff, a girl who seated us was very attentive and friendly.

The food menu was small – 2 types of dry noodles and 2 types of soup noodles, going for RM1.90 a bowl. Why so cheap? Cause each bowl has the portion of about two tablespoons of noodles and you’re supposed to order more than one bowl to fill you up.

On a bad day, I tend to think it’s a bit gimmicky, but on a good day why not? It’s fun!

# – How many can you take?

The restaurant’s interior is slightly cramped but not uncomfortable.

# – Small tables.

This is essentially a Thai-style restaurant selling the beef/chicken noodles we’re familiar with on the streets of Thailand. So, the condiments available are naturally very Thai too.

# – The condiments – reminiscent of Thailand’s restaurants.

As it’s our first time, we ordered a total of 10 bowls of both dry chicken and beef noodles.

# – Our first order.

Each bowl had about 2 tablespoon of rice noodles, with gravy heavily infused with spices, a couple of meatballs, bits of meat, fresh herbs and bean sprouts. I enjoyed it – simple, honest, delicious noodles.

Don’t expect any firework and you will be just fine. Also, I found sprinkling some chilli pepper flakes over gave the noodles an addictive kick!

# – Close-up.

Then we ordered more noodles.

# – Noms noms noms!

In the end, the hubs chalked up 11 bowls, while I managed a respectable 7 bowls.

# – Her vs him.

So, will we come back again? Yes. I enjoyed the noodles as what they were, simple Thai street food that is not easily available locally. I was quite skeptical about the mini bowl concept but eventually I found it fun and sociable.

Seriously best roast duck I have ever eaten – Restaurant De’ Champion Duck in Kepong

We have seen this restaurant numerous times as our favourite pork noodles joint is on the same row, but never tried it as the place always seemed rather quiet.

Until one hot afternoon. I think we weren’t quite sure what to eat, so we decided to give the place a try.

Afterall, everytime we passed by it, there were always rows of delicious looking roast ducks hung at the front of the shop.

# – Charsiew (chinese bbq roast pork).

The restaurant is called Restaurant De’ Champion Duck.

# – De’ Champion Duck.

As usual, the restaurant was pretty quiet, but I reckoned it was because we were there pretty early.

# – Don’t understand why so quiet one.

We ordered 3 types of meats – roast duck, charsiew and roast chicken.

The charsiew was legit, great ratio of meat and fat and melted in my mouth. The roast chicken was tender with crispy skin but not that memorable.

# – Glistening charsiew.

# – Unmemorable roast chicken.

As for the duck…I was blown away! Never had I ate a chinese roast duck with such crispy skin and tender meat before. And it’s all around crispy, not just as certain places. The gravy was also proper – you could tell it was cooked from genuine duck drippings….and not substantiated with too much corn flour and sugar.

So delicious!

The last time we had such a good experience with roast duck was Onn Kee in Kepong, but their quality has since dropped. I would say the roast duck at De’ Champion Duck is better than the heydays of Onn Kee!

Served with the yellowish, fluffy oily rice, obviously cooked with either chicken or duck stock – fabulous!

# – The fluffy rice.

We also ordered the mustard stew (choi kiok). It was rich and flavoursome, but a tad too spicy and not tart enough for me.

They also sell braised duck wings, which we didn’t try. Not too sure about them haha.

I highly recommend this place for roast duck and charsiew!
