Found my sea urchin gonad fix

I love sea urchin gonads…or as the japanese calls them – uni. The best uni I have ever had was on a chirashisushi at Tskukiji Market, Tokyo.

Imagine if the sea was made of clotted cream……that was how it tasted like.

Since, I have never tasted anything as close. So I just stopped looking and hope to be able to afford another trip to the land of the rising sun for my fix.

Recently though, at the advice of a friend (hello, Lainie!)….I convinced the husband to get out of the queue for Sushi Zanmai (which I love by the way for their reasonably cheap and decent Japanese fare) in 1 Utama and headed towards Iciro Sushi Bar.

Best decision we have ever made!

Ichiro Sushi Bar is a pretty small restaurant tucked behind the more prominent ramen restaurants in 1 Utama’s Isetan.

No-nonsense decor but still comfortable. We sat at the bar and was met with two Japanese chefs.

We went at an odd hour, so was pleased to have the restaurant all to ourselves. What a great change of environment from the chaotic Sushi Zanmai earlier.

Greeted with an iPad menu, the first thing I ordered….

# – Luscious uni sushi.

So, it did cost RM16 a pop, but they’re so generous with the gonads it’s totally worth it. Still not Tsukiji standard, but pretty damn close. I was truly happy.

We also had several other types of sushi, same generous portions of fresh seafood. Love it!

# – Crab, scallop, salmon roe and fake crabmeat (sorry, that’s my ghetto indulgence).

I ordered a loose sushi (bara chirashi) because I needed MORE rice and also, it was special lunch deal item (can take a girl out of Cheras, can’t take Cheras out of her). What a superb decision I made because it was so delicious!

Mixture of japanese rice, salmon roe, chopped omelette, chopped tuna, chopped salmon, chopped octopus, chopped cucumbers, tobiko, pickles and more uni! Loved it!

# – Bara chirashi.

We also had a roll, which I forgot to take picture of….beautiful! And salmon sashimi, which I also forgot to take picture of :P

Not the cheapest lunch we’ve had, but it’s the kind of place where you’d walk out full, happy and willingly broke. Definitely going back!

Godzilla seahum

Dressed up for the wedding of one of my oldest, longest friends, Bryan. Not using a mirror cause it’s too dark.

# – Body straight.

# – Body not straight.

This is a champagne gold/black dress I got at a steal from Asos a couple of years ago. I shop awfully lot from Asos, but only from clearance section.

I don’t wear this dress often because it’s pretty impossible to eat in it. Only for special occasions, like a good friend’s wedding :)

Stilettos are from Payless Shoes in Sunway Pyramid. I’ve got two more pairs in gold and red. The clutch is from Bangkok.

My smile is damn weird these days. My lips can’t form a curve without having the braces cutting the inside of my mouth.

I just need patience, as long as I stay patient I will get the best gawdamn smile the world will ever see in 2 years! Rawrrrr!

+++++++++++=

I love seahum (cockles). Juicy, bloody morsels of heaven. On the way back from Pom Pom Island, we stopped by Tawau for dinner.

The first thing that caught my eyes were the seahums – they were humongous!

I started asking everyone whether they like seahums because I didn’t think I could finish a whole kilo by myself (which was the minimum order).

Nobody was into in :(

Nevertheless, I ordered a kilo of them, half boiled.

# – Seahums.

Pretty ordinary looking cockles, right?

# – Not.

As it turned out, I have no problem finishing a kilo of gigantic seahums by myself.

Godzilla seahums for Kimzilla. Love it!

Anyway, the restaurant is called Kam Ling. It’s apparently the most popular seafood restaurant in Tawau. The price is pretty reasonable for a KL-ite and the variety of seafood is astounding!

I’d go back again if I were ever in Tawau.

Good food at Ah Lye Curry Fish Head, Subang SS19

Just want to share with you guys this place I went for lunch recently. It’s called Ah Lye Curry Fish Head and it’s located in SS19, Subang.

# – Ah Lye Curry Fish Head.

I love fish head curries but only the ones sold in chinese joints. I don’t mind the ones by indians…but I always find them slightly too spicy for me and I don’t mean spicy as in heat. Sorry, am racist when it comes to fish head curries.

Maybe I haven’t found a good indian curry fish head yet. Feel free to enlighten me!

Anyway, back to Ah Lye’s. My lunchmates were really excited about the place while I was more worried about how I was going to chew.

Background story, I just had orthodontic rubber spacers put around my teeth for my pre-braces work…so they’re tender as hell and I can’t really chew cause the rubbers broke the 1st time I attempted chewing.

# – Gross picture of my teeth. Spot the blue orthodontic spacers? These stuff are suppose to create gaps between my teeth.

Right now, I can only chew with my two front teeth (TEDIOUS) and it’s getting harder each day because I swear I can feel like my teeth have protruded even more than they were before the spacers. Bla bla bla who cares?

(I realise I should blog about my teeth in another post and not a food review post lol sorry)

Ah Lye’s Curry Fish Head is located in a row of shops smacked right in the middle of SS19 residences. When we’re there, parking was ample but I think we’re just lucky.

A friend who’s a regular did the ordering.

# – Fish head curry of course. It comes in Medium or Large portion.

Dayummmm it was good! The fish was just nice, fresh and flaky. The curry gravy was flavoursome…so delicious!

In fact, my friend who did the ordering told us that the last time she brought her brother there, when all the fish and vegetables had been devoured save the gravy, her brother ordered another bowl of rice, dumped it into the claypot, mixed it all up with the gravy and ate it all!

I can totally understand and if I had known earlier that someone had already pulled off such an anti-social stunt I would have gladly done the same. Hehehe.

# – Nam Yu pork.

The Nam Yu pork was pretty good but not outstanding. I think mostly cause I had issues chewing them too :( Nevertheless they went down well with everyone.

# – Deep fried stuffed bean curd sheets.

Pretty damn good. Sure, it was a bit greasy, but oh so delicious! It was filled with bits of carrots and onions, very appetising, very moreish.

# – Asam prawns.

I thought these were marmite prawns with a tangy twist at first, but they weren’t. They’re actually tamarind prawns and they were OMFG GREAT! The sticky sauce was addictive, the prawns were huge AND fresh. Sucking off the prawn heads….blissful! I could have eaten about a dozen of this if it weren’t for my stupid teeth. I mean the fish head curry was great but I would go back to Ah Lye just for the prawns, no question.

Ah Lye Curry Fish Head is an air-conditioned joint, which makes it an awesome lunch place as you can take shelter from the sweltering heat. Temperature’s been really crazy lately by the way. The service was pretty fast and no-nonsense.

Becareful when you order “small” rice though because they’re not kidding about the size – the portion literally is about 3 tablespoons of rice.

I will be back!
